The profile consists of a complete blood count with ESR (erythrocyte sedimentation rate) and is a standard haematology test that tests a blood sample for a variety of basic measurements of blood components. It determines the amount of haemoglobin and the number of red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. Abnormal levels of blood cells might be a sign of inflammation, viral and bacterial infections, allergies, as well as, various illnesses and disorders.
It is recommended to have the test once a year. However, if you have recently observed that you get tired more easily, have problems with concentration or you catch a cold more often than usual, it is worth to have the haematology test to get the general health assessment.
IT IS WORTH TO KNOW:
What is erythrocyte sedimentation rate?
Sed rate, or erythrocyte sedimentation rate ( ESR ), is a blood test that can reveal inflammatory condition in your body. It analyses the rate at which red blood cells sediment in a period of one hour. It is performed by placing anticoagulated blood in an upright tube, and the rate at which the red blood cells fall is measured in mm/h.
Raised ESR might be caused by some minor, hard to locate throat infection or tooth problem. However, it can also indicate some more serious health problem. ESR raised above 10-20 percent is often a sign of severe inflammation and infection of liver, thyroid, kidney, rheumatic diseases, leukaemia or other cancers.
